January 14, 2003

Federal Bureau of Investigation

Hosted by Alton Sizemore of the FBI

Alton Sizemore, supervisor of the Cybercrimes unit, opened our meeting by discussing recent investigative efforts in the Birmingham area. The message was clear -- this is not theoretical stuff. It happens every day all around us.

Wendy Davis and Lynn Williford of the Computer Analysis and Response Team spoke next about their work for the Bureau. Wendy is recently assigned from headquarters and described the forensic process and software they use to analyze seized machines.

Jim Philips, US Attorney for the State of Alabama, spoke on several recent successful convictions, including a local company who lost their data about more than ten thousand customers when a disgruntled ex-employee accessed the system from her new employer, and a locally based hacker who attacked NASA computers.

A successful and enlightening Q&A session followed.
